Although Phyllis and Harold dissects a marriage it cannot escape also being about the courage and generosity of the daughter who made the film. Cindy's compassion, testament to a triumphant escape from the madness of her childhood, adds the element to this brilliant, tragic/comic portrayal that makes the movie a classic.
