In the vibrant, bohemian neighborhood of South Philadelphia, 50,000-square feet of concrete are covered with tile and mirrors—mosaics that were created by Isaiah Zagar, an eccentric, tormented artist. The murals chronicle his love for his wife, Julia, and subtly hint at the darker corners of an extraordinary imagination.
For decades, Isaiah and Julia complemented one another perfectly. But suddenly the family is torn apart at the seams when Isaiah confesses to an affair, is kicked out of the house, and spirals into depression.
A fascinating portrait of love and betrayal, family bonds, and the intimacy of dysfunction.
WINNER - Emerging Visions Audience Award at SXSW Film Festival
WINNER - Audience Award for Best Feature at San Francisco Documentary Festival "***1/2 Stunning, deeply personal. IN A DREAM captures a family imploding. Their lives are laid bare, in broken bits, like the ceramic that Isaiah uses for his art, and they come together with sadness and beauty, rage and insight." Steven Rea, The Philadelphia Inquirer
“One of the most unexpectedly touching documentaries I’ve ever seen." Scott Weinberg, Cinematical

I saw In A Dream at a Jewish film festival about a month ago. I was familiar with the mosaic buidings from the days I used to hang out on South Street with my friends, but I had no idea about the artist himself. After seeing this documentary, however, I feel like a part of the Zagar family. Not only did the film reveal such personal details about the characters, but the themes of marriage, addiction, abuse, gender identity, Judaism, mental illness, etc. play out in ways that I connected to in the most secret places of my heart. The strength I saw modeled by Isaiah's wife in particular, and Jeremiah's courage to share this story with the public have left me feeling inspired and grateful.
