showtimes and tickets

Paul H-O became a fixture of the New York art scene in the 1990’s with his public access show GalleryBeat. Armed with a video camera, he attended art gallery openings amusing some with his candid, witty assessments of their work, but also winning many fans. Among the latter was Cindy Sherman, the press-shy artist who is internationally acknowledged as one of the world’s most gifted and significant visual talents. Cindy invites Paul to her studio for a series of exclusive interviews and through these videotaped encounters, he gains unprecedented insight into her artistic process and a romantic relationship blossoms. Their initial bliss ends when Paul finds himself wracked with anxiety about his own personality becoming subsumed by his role as Cindy’s guest at the celebrity-studded openings and dinners she regularly attends. Filmed over 15 years and including interviews with a veritable who’s who of the art and entertainment world, the film paints a vivid picture of the New York art scene that is also a witty, illuminating look at celebrity, male anxiety, and art.

OFFICIAL SELECTION - Tribeca Film Festival 2008

"At once a fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse, bittersweet autobiography and witty trip down art-world memory lane, GUEST OF CINDY SHERMAN isn't out to settle scores or exploit access, public or otherwise."
Nathan Lee, The New York Times

"A highly entertaining evisceration and celebration of the milieu. It's also a fascinating, probably one-sided view of the artist herself."
Ella Taylor, Village Voice

I keep hearing that this is a really good film. Also, I heard there's a directors Q&A on the Friday and Saturday night screening, so I definitely want to check that out.

Good to know about the Q&A - bet those shows will sell out. Tickets aren't on sale online just yet, but hopefully soon.

paul who? cindy who?

unless you're a 60 year old new yorker with a slight memory of the new york art scene of yesteryear, this film is not for you. totally niche and alienating. it didn't resonate with me at all.

I didn't find the film alienating at all. It made the art world accessible and (g_d forbid!) even fun! It's by far the best film I've seen all year, doc or otherwise!

Wow, I'm speechless. What a great film. For anyone (especially New Yorkers) who loves art, this film is for you. Full of laughs and some of the best artists in the world. This is not to be missed.
