THE GARDEN is a powerful look at the famous political and social battle over the largest community garden in the US (located in South Central Los Angeles).

A follow-up to Kennedy’s award-winning documentary OT: OUR TOWN, the film shows how the politics of power and greed (backroom deals, land developing, green politics, money) tragically intersect with working class families who rely on this communal garden for their livelihood. THE GARDEN exposes the fault lines in American society and raises crucial and challenging questions about liberty, equality, and justice for the poorest and most vulnerable among us.

As questions about the environment, climate change, energy consumption, and especially access to healthy organic food and the greening of our cities and our economy move to the forefront, THE GARDEN serves as a startling wake up call. The garden, a 14-acre parcel in South Central LA, one of our most infamous urban areas, challenges us to reexamine our priorities and values in the urgency of this moment of economic crisis and opportunity.

NOMINATED - ACADEMY AWARD for Best Documentary Feature 2008
WINNER - Grand Jury Award at Silverdocs Documentary Festival 2008

"It's tempting to call THE GARDEN a story of innocence and experience, of evil corrupting paradise, but that would be doing a disservice to the fascinating complexities of a classic Los Angeles conflict and an excellent documentary that does them full justice."
Kenneth Turan, LA Times

I note your speaker list and do not see some of the people, lower east siders or people from BANG brooklyn gardeners, that led the campaign that led to the preservation of over 100 community gardens and the creation of the Land Trusts in NYC. It was not Bette Midler and Trust for Public Land that did it. The land trust person should feel it valuable to invite the people that made their jobs possible.

Great film, saw it last year. Doesn't get sidetracked by the "stars" as valuable as their efforts were. Shows the corruption on every level in every city, and the importance of direct action and transcending "consensus". And last I heard the land was not built on, so plant it! Green jobs! We are winning!

I love seeing the garden in this film, it is amazing. And how the different people worked together, cool. Shows how politicians and some ngo's sell people out too. Very valuable. And the filmmaker wasn't even an activist, just got drawn into this compelling story!
