UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US is a feature length documentary about black metal: an ideological movement/music genre based in Norway and comprised of metal musicians, murderers, church-burners, and suicide victims. The film examines the birth and explosive arc of black metal through the eyes of the scene’s leaders, who tried to change the world using music and symbolic acts of violence. Three men lead the scene: one is dead, one’s in jail for killing him and inciting a wave of church arson, and one continues to release albums in the genre they created. The musicians blur the line between music, art, activism and terror, and successful visual artists (including Harmony Korine, who makes a cameo) are now recontextualizing it as contemporary art in galleries and museums around the world. Part (post)modern art movement, part terrorist movement, and part rock scene, the film tells a story unlike any other.
"Smartly constructed...richly compelling and artfully shot." Aaron Hillis, LA WEEKLY (Critic's Pick)
"My favorite kind of documentary... incredibly effective." Ain't It Cool News
"Morbidly fascinating" Variety

I just saw this documentary yesterday, I have to say that over-all I did like it. I felt that it could've been a bit longer, though, and they could've spent more time on each topic that they covered. However, it was shot well and there was a distinct artistic aspect in some parts. I suppose depending on what you went to see the film for, and what you expected, will affect your opinion of the film. Being part of the Black Metal scene myself, I think I have a different opinion, rather than, let's say, some one who has no background knowledge of the genre, bands, people, ect. But as I said, over-all, it was a good film and worth seeing. Not to mention quite humorous. (:

Excellent movie. The guys who stole the show were Abbath and Demonaz from Immortal. Varg was fascinating, and I mean that from both positive and negative aspects. His explanation for his murder seemed like words from a lawyer through his mouth. But it was well done. However as a black metal die hard I feel they didn't get enough people from the Norwegian scene in the movie. They could have included the Emperor guys, Nocturno Culto (Darkthrone), Satyr (Satyricon), any of the Gorgoroth guys, etc. I feel like I needed more voices or people who were there during the heyday of the early 90's in Norway. That's my only gripe, but it's a minor one. Either way, the movie satisfied me very much and I loved it. Go see it. If not, get the dvd when it's out.

Hmmmm.... I went in hoping to learn something about a topic I am totally intrigued by... I left laughing at churches burning. Not sure what that says but I was certainly entertained.
