I saw this film at the DOC-NY festival and it is truly excellent! I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in seeing a true depiction of Mumia Abu-Jamal as the brilliant journalist and admirable human being he is. It is an atrocity that in this country, which proclaims itself the world's bastion of free speech and expression, a brilliant and innocent man has been condemned to die in prison for reporting on police brutality and surviving the Philadelphia Police Department's attempt to assassinate him. Mumia Abu-Jamal is the definitive folk hero if he rellay killed the racist pig who was trying to kill his brother. The real victim is Mumia, not the felonious pig lowlife he may have killed. Caught this film at DOC NYC... it was not what I was expecting; the film grabs you and never lets go. Most docs can't keep the pace and interest level up. This one just thumps. I knew a bit about Mumia but this new doc digs deep. The historic people interviewed are engaging and the interviews with Mumia are engrossing. The historic overview of Philadelphia and the racism in that city is well exposed here. Dr. Cornel West also steals the show - love his insights. Can't wait to see this film again. More docs should be this entertaining. I'll be there.

Attention all my East Coast friends and family: I attended this film at the Mill Valley Film Festival with great trepidation and only because it was so highly acclaimed by the MVFF staff. What on earth do I have in common with an activist Black Panther I wondered. Well, this film is a fascinating, touching, inspirational must see. I am donating tickets for schools organizing field trips to see it--that's how important a story I think it is. It is about a brilliant, peaceful man who has been systematically silenced, his journey to be heard and his ability to over come insurmountable odds peacefully and with love. It's opening in NY on Feb 1st may be the determining factor as to whether it gets to go mainstream. Please consider attending that weekend. Consider it your continuing education opportunity--at minimum you will be fascinated and inspired.

There appears to be no question regarding Mumia’s guilt and LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABUL-JAMAL doesn’t bother making an attempt to argue otherwise. It’s not a film like THIN BLUE LINE or PARADISE LOST that sets out to prove an innocent man is behind bars. Imagine if DELIVER US FROM EVIL, the 2006 documentary about a priest convicted of child molesting, focused on a bunch of celebrities gushing about the brilliance of the subject’s sermons, determined to put a halo on his head without once addressing his crimes. Abu-Jamal is constantly referred throughout the film as “the most famous political prisoner in the United States”, but that’s inaccurate. A political prisoner is someone who is imprisoned for his or her participation in political activity. I hope one thing that Democrats and Republicans alike can agree on is that cop killing is not political activity.

I thank Elba Matos for her positive comments regarding “Long Distance Revolutionary” and Mumia Abu-Jamal. Like Ms. Matos, I was moved to tears by the scene in the film showing the suffering of Mumia’s daughter due to the physical separation imposed by the prison. However, I would appreciate clarification from Ms. Matos regarding her dedication of “Love Is Like an Itching in My Heart” to Mumia. Does this dedication refer to Mumia’s love for humanity, Ms. Matos’ love for Mumia, or both?
As for the post by “Randy Bone” dedicating “I Shot the Sheriff” to Mumia, this is baffling, to say the least. If it is intended as a derisive retort to Ms. Matos and/or an assertion of Mumia’s guilt, it falls very far short of the mark and only shows Mr. Bone’s ignorance. In fact, “I Shot the Sheriff” was written, originally recorded and originally performed by Jamaican reggae singer Bob Marley – the greatest reggae singer, songwriter and musician who ever lived, and one of the greatest singers, songwriters and musicians who ever lived – and the lyrics tell the story of a farmer who was repeatedly harassed by a sheriff and ultimately shoots the sheriff IN SELF-DEFENSE because THE SHERIFF IS SHOOTING AND TRYING TO KILL THE FARMER. Far from being a confession to murder, therefore, the lyrical narrative of “I Shot the Sheriff” is actually an assertion of justifiable homicide. In any event, this song is most likely irrelevant to the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal, who was probably successfully defended by his brother’s friend, Kenneth Freeman.
Interestingly, however, Mumia Abu-Jamal did one of the best interviews with Bob Marley for WUHY in 1979, focusing on Marley’s messages of African unity and resistance to oppression, and tracing the roots of the Rastafarian movement in Marcus Garvey’s back-to-Africa movement and the culture of the Jamaican Maroons, escaped slaves who established an independent society in the mountains. I would like to dedicate – or as Rastafarians say, LIVicate – another Marley song, “Exodus,” to Mumia:
“Jah come to break down downpression, rule I-quality,
“Wipe away transgression, SET THE CAPTIVES FREE!”
As Bob Marley said in his interview with Mumia, “When you unite, that is the power of God.” May the unity of the people have the power to FREE MUMIA ABU-JAMAL NOW!

To R.B. Wilk question about using he dedication to a certain song to Mumia has first to do with Mumia's love for humanity. I know Mumia is a married man, and even though he is one good looking and fine black man i am not a man stealer. having said that, i love Mumia too because of his giving unconditionally a love that speaks to truth and justice, that speaks out aginst all forms of repression and oppression, he helps people understand what they are up against nd how to struggle and mot cave into forces of depression and alienation, in a nut shell i love the guy because he is jack cool.

Tom Stockman’s claim of incontrovertible guilt merely repeats the Fox “News”/Fraternal Order of Police anti-Mumia rant graphically depicted in Long Distance Revolutionary, and intelligently rebutted by various well-informed journalists, academics and others in the film. In fact, the inconclusive, contradictory, and at least partially fabricated evidence, as well as the blatant racism and pro-prosecution bias of the judge – among other instances of police, prosecutorial and judicial misconduct in this case – are grounds for very serious doubt as to Mumia Abu-Jamal’s guilt, and leave absolutely no doubt that his conviction was obtained by fraudulent means. Like hundreds of other Black Panther Party members and other political dissidents in the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s, Mumia Abu-Jamal was targeted for a hit by law enforcement and railroaded to a murder conviction for surviving. If any political dissident in another country came under similar attack, the American media would unhesitatingly acknowledge such a person as a political prisoner.
As for Stockman’s analogy with a priest convicted of child molestation, this is novel but misleading. Since Stephen Vittoria intentionally set out to make a film about Mumia himself, rather than yet another argument about his case, it should come as no surprise that the film focuses on Mumia rather than his case. However, if a priest were falsely accused and intentionally framed for child molestation because he preached against war or in favor of gay rights, then that priest would indeed be a political prisoner, and a review of his sermons would shed much-needed light on the actual motivation for his wrongful conviction. And, sadly, no priest who is truly guilty and fairly proven guilty of child molestation would be punished anywhere nearly as severely as a black man who survives an attempted assassination by white police officers in this country.

The hate filled people imprisoning this most creative and valuble voice knows his potential impact on masses of people and that is why they try to silence his voice because he is articulate and upright. Having said that, i thank whole heartedly the makers of this creative documentary, it speaks to the power of creativity, it fights against the dullness of decadent capitalist society with its fetishesism of consumerism, the answer to a fascist organized society is to create more documentaries, more movies, arts, books and music that speaks to a popular culture and fights to wipe out nazism, fascisms and all forces of hatred.

There is no doubt about Mumia's guilt. Saying he's innocent again and again won't change that. When you shoot a cop half a dozen times at point blank range in front of several witnesses, when the bullets from the cop’s body match your registered weapon, when that cop shoots you before he dies, when you refuse to testify on you own behalf, it doesn’t look so good. The evidence was overwhelming and Mumia was convicted by a mixed-racejury. During the trial, Officer Faulkner's blood-stained shirt was displayed in the courtroom. Mumia deliberately turned around and grinned at Officer Faulkner's widow as her husband's shirt was displayed. Several witnesses saw this. Such a deliberate act of pure evil is not characteristic of an innocent man.

Tom Stockman’s second post should rightly be removed as inappropriate for this website. Stockman merely repeats the blatant LIES of the fry-Mumia lynch mob – most notably the story that Mumia Abu-Jamal “grinned” (or did he smirk?) at Maureen Faulkner when her husband’s “bloody shirt” (or was it a jacket?) was displayed in the courtroom, when in fact MUMIA ABU-JAMAL WAS NOT EVEN PRESENT IN THE COURTROOM AT THE TIME because JUDGE SABO HAD BARRED MUMIA FROM HIS OWN TRIAL. More to the point, however, Stockman’s remarks are virtually irrelevant to the discussion of Stephen Vittoria’s documentary, “Long Distance Revolutionary,” which intentionally focuses on Mumia himself rather than the endless and often tiresome debate about his case.
Anyone who wants to see an intelligent, factual examination of Mumia Abu-Jamal’s case, which was in fact riddled with doubt, should watch the DVD of John Edgington’s HBO special, “A Case for Reasonable Doubt,” or Johanna Fernandez’s film, “Justice on Trial.” And anyone who wishes to confirm their delusion of certainty as to Mumia Abu-Jamal’s guilt can watch “The Barrel of a Gun,” Tigre Hill’s F.O.P.-funded two-hour advertisement for Mumia Abu-Jamal’s execution, which is most noteworthy for its intentional omission of crucial information and its use of third-rate Celtic music in a pathetically obvious attempt to engage the emotions of its intended white audience.
I urge all open-minded and rational people to see “Long Distance Revolutionary” and judge for yourselves. At the very least, you will be entertained; at best, you will learn who and what Mumia Abu-Jamal truly is.

Lastly, i am intimately familar with the national security state as i have studied it for the last one hundred years, and I have personally been a subject of their evil and wicked ways, i can speak volumes about this subject. The agent provacutuers use word associations, and book associations to real situations of death. Plenty of times a death in my area or the University where i work at had similar name associaions to the authors of the books that i was currently reading, believe me i could not make this up myself. It is the most strangest and odd guilt trip that they try to impose on another. Same with this film, I could say that the creator who goes by the name Victorria has a similar name of a teacher who was killed at the Newtown school massacre, perhaps it is coincidence and someting that belongs in some fiction-mystery, i just know that plenty of times these wierd things have happened to me. The point that i am making is that as a tribute to them in their memory everyone should go see this movie. I feel crazy putting this in this space, but since a certain person is accusing mumia of being guilty of commiting a murder that HE DID not Commit then ....

Oh, the humanity! I’m sure Officer Faulkner would gladly trade the bullets in his skull for the poor baby’s sore fingers. Mumia’s written at least seven books from prison and he could probably write more if they would just give him a computer (and he wouldn’t get those boo boos on his fingers). When a British Pakistani writer named Tariq Ali says with a straight face “If there’s any justice in the world, they’ll award Mumia the Nobel Peace Prize, but I’ll bet they won’t”, I started to wonder if LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABUL-JAMAL was some sort of put-on. Mother Teresa, Desmond Tutu, Martin Luther King Jr. are all recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize but does anyone outside of Bizarro World really think a convicted cop killer deserves to join their ranks? This film is clearly part of an international campaign to free a killer. If you’re interested in myths and mass ignorance, there might be something of interest in LONG DISTANCE REVOLUTIONARY: A JOURNEY WITH MUMIA ABUL-JAMAL but anyone with a conscience is advised to skip it.

I love all my brothers and sisters, it does not matter if they are white, black, or latino, or asian, but i did feel the need to say something for these last couple of days, and i am going to say it, because the other day i didn't know whether i should express it or not, because i do not like to show favoritism, but i am going to say it anyway, i love the hell out of black people, they are so beautiful and they have a lot of soul. They have contribute so much to this country, they have formented in me the will to live and struggle, have given me education and culture, revolutionary education. so know i grasp the true meaning of the title of this important documentary.
