At a time when high-stakes poker games and spelling bee competitions have evolved into pop culture phenomena, Scrabble has surfaced as the next fast-paced, intellectually stimulating and extremely competitive trend. The top 24 players in North America competed for $100,000 in prizes at the Scrabble All-Stars 2003, and the event was recorded for a first-ever telecast on ESPN. However, competing in an event of this stature is akin to climbing the Mount Everest of all language challenges. It¹s not just memorizing the dictionary, it is knowing obscure two-letter words that most people never use, or being able to list all of the "Q without U" words, such as qaid and qindar. Three champion SCRABBLE players are the subjects of the Discovery Times Channel/ 7th Art Releasing documentary WORD WARS: Joe Edley (the only three-time National Champion, going for his fourth), "G.I." Joel Sherman, (2002 National Scrabble Champ & 1997 World Scrabble Champ) and Marlon Hill (won 2nd place in the 1996 National Scrabble Championship).
