"Make art not war" is Jimmy Mirikitani's motto. This 85-year-old Japanese American artist was born in Sacramento and raised in Hiroshima, but by 2001 he was living on the streets of New York. What begins as a simple verite portrait of one homeless man becomes a rare document of daily life in New York in the months leading up to and following 9/11.
The filmmaker finds herself unable to passively photograph this elderly man coughing in the toxic smoke, and invites him into her small apartment. In this uncharted landscape, the two navigate the maze of social welfare, seek out family and friends, and research Jimmy's painful past -- finding eerie parallels to events unfolding around them in the present. Blending beauty and humor with tragedy and loss, THE CATS OF MIRIKITANI is an intimate exploration of the lingering wounds of war and the healing power of art. A heart-warming affirmation of humanity that will appeal to all lovers of peace, art, and cats.
[One of Cinema Village's favorite features of 2007, THE CATS OF MIRIKITANI is an Oscar nomination hopeful and comes back to our screens for a special two day return engagement on Sat Oct 26 and Sun Oct 27 at 12 noon]
"The Cats of Mirikitani won the audience-favorite prize at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival, and it was my favorite, too. It’s one of the best kinds of documentaries—not calculated but serendipitous. An accident. A miracle." -David Edelstein, NEW YORK MAGAZINE
"What begins as a straightforward docu on an elderly homeless artist in New York City winds up as an indictment of U.S. internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII in Linda Hattendorf's startlingly timely 'The Cats of Mirikitani.'" - Ronnie Scheib, VARIETY
"If you're not moved by his movie, you're really a hard case." -Michael Wilmington, CHICAGO TRIBUNE
"Entirely, vibrantly human...A brief but satisfying look at a defiantly self-sufficient life." -Jeannette Catsoulis, THE NEW YORK TIMES
2006 Tribeca Film Festival Winner - Audience Award

This is a passionate film that invokes laughter, tears, and thought. Loving and insistent, peace is found within the expression of art.

Heart warming, deeply touching movie. The two artists (Mirikitani and the filmmaker) friendship and persistant love for art created a great documentary. I admire Linda Hattendorf's fact finding endeaver, and genuine love for people and life.

I used to see the artist that I knew only as "the cat man" in Washington Square Park and then one day, he was gone; the park seemed empty, and I started to avoid the area with the tree stump. I laughed and cried during this movie. I was so happy to see the tiger picture again and even happier to hear the amazing story of this talented man and his brave new friend. Thank you for making this movie. You are a true teacher Mr. Mirikitani.

This wonderful film is about so many things: art, the power of personal integrity, individual strength and vulnerability. Above all, it is about the consequence war on the individual and society. A filmmaker's act of love.

Is this film too much (inappropriate) for a 7 & 12 year old? I'd like to take my kids, but not sure if they could handle it.
