Amu is the story of Kaju, a twenty-one-year-old Indian American woman who returns to India to visit her family and discover the place where she was born. The film takes a dark turn as Kaju stumbles against secrets and lies from her past. A horrifying genocide that took place twenty years ago turns out to hold the key to her mysterious origins.

"AMU, the ambitious debut feature by Shonali Bose, wears its political heart on its sleeve and is unafraid to tackle big topics: identity, history, truth, injustice."
Rachel Saltz, The New York Times

"Less about finger-pointing than a plea for India to confront its past, to overthrow its official amnesia and deal with the cycles of sectarian violence that continue to haunt that country as witnessed by the 2002 uprising in Gujarat. (The film ends as those riots begin.) Bose is a fearless filmmaker who certainly knows how to tell an engrossing tale without compromising her political viewpoint."
Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter

"[Shaonali Bose] has a good eye and a sharp ear, qualities that elevate AMU beyond mere good intentions."
Adam Nayman, Eye Weekly

"AMU is brilliant! A must see!" -- Mira Nair, director (The Namesake, Salaam Bombay)

"I loved AMU! A profoundly affecting film! --Deepa Mehta, director (Water)

The story shows that all adopted persons must know their story if possible and end secrecy. For crimes committed by ruling members of society there is no justice in this case, but there is always some satisfaction in seeing the story in film by a superb cast and director.

This moving film, packed intrique, has compelled me to explore this ugly history of the pogroms against the Sikhs in 1984, which I knew nothing about until today. The chemistry between the charactors was superb. I look forward to Shonali Bose's future films.
