AN OKAY SCIENCE FICTION FILM

October 16, 2022
I SAW THIS FILM MANY YEARS AGO AT THE FILM FORUM. MY MAIN INTEREST IN SEEING IT WAS TO SEE EDDIE CONSTANTINE BECAUSE HE HAD BEEN GREAT FRIENDS WITH EDITH PIAF, AND WAS FEATURED IN AN EXCELLENT DOCUMENTAY ABOUT HER THAT WAS FIRST SHOWN ON PBS BACK IN THE SUMMER OF 1976 AND WAS REPEATED IN THE SUMMER OF 1977. AS FAR AS I KNOW, IT HAS NEVER BEEN SHOWN AGAIN. I WISH ONE OF THE REVIVAL THEATERS WOULD SHOW IT. (THE FILM FORUM IS CURRENTLY SHOWING "BREATHLESS," WHICH I SAW MANY YEARS AGO AT THE LATE, MUCH LAMENTED BLEECKER ST CINEMA, AND DIDN'T LIKE AT ALL. I HAVE NEVER UNDERSTOOD WHY IT WAS SO POPULAR. THE TWO FILMS THAT JEAN SEBERG MADE WITH OTTO PREMIBGER- "BONJOUR TRISTESSE " AND "ST JOAN"- WERE SO MUCH BETTER).
