A GOOD REVENGE DRAMA THAT EVOLVES INTO A GREAT FAMILY DRAMA

August 18, 2021
IT WAS SO GOOD TO SEE RICHARD DREYFUSS AND MIRA SORVINO IN A MOVIE TOGETHER. I NEVER THOUGHT THAT HE SHOULD HAVE WON THE OSCAR FOR "THE GOODBYE GIRL." (I THOUGHT THAT HONOR SHOULD HAVE GONE TO EITHER RICHARD BURTON FOR ""EQUUS" OR MARCELLO MASTROAINNI FOR "A SPECIAL DAY"), BUT HE HAS BECOME A REALLY VERSATILE CHARACTER ACTOR OVER THE YEARS (AS COULD BE SEEN IN HIS POWERFUL PERFORMANCES IN THE BROADWAY VERSION OF "DEATH AND THE MAIDEN" AND IN A WESTPORT THEATER PRODUCTION OF "ALL MY SONS" OPPOSITE JILL CLAYBURGH). IN HIS INITIAL SCENES WITH HIS ALZHEIMERS-STRICKEN WIFE, HE DISPLAYS SO MUCH TENDERNESS TOWARDS HER, BUT, WHEN HE VIOLENTLY OVERREACTS TO HER AFTER DISCOVERING THAT THEY HAVE BEEN BURGLARIZED, HE SUCCESSFULLY REVEALS HIS CHARACTER'S DARK SIDE. I ALSO THOUGHT THAT MIRA SORVINO'S PERFORMANCE IN "MIGHTY APHRODITE" WON A LITTLE TOO MUCH ACCLAIM (IT WAS AMUSING, BUT NOT OSCAR WORTHY), AND HER DEVASTATING PERFORMANCE IN "SWEET NOTHING" WAS LARGELY OVERLOOKED. IN THIS FILM, SHE IS SO SKILLFUL AT DISPLAYING THE VARIOUS SIDES TO HER CHARACTER. ALTHOUGH THIS IS BASICALLY A REVENGE DRAMA, MR. DREYFUSS, MS. SORVINO, AND DIRECTOR ADAM LIPSIUS HELP TO TRANSPORT IT INTO SOMETHING MUCH MORE.
