CREEPY AND SEDUCTIVE HORROR FILM

October 5, 2022
DIRECTOR CHRIS VON HOFFMAN HAS CERTAINLY SUCCEEDED IN CREATING AN ATMOSPHERE IN WHICH HIS INNOCENT YOUNG CHARACTER (PLAYED BY TIMOTHY GRANADEROS) CAN BE LULLED INTO BELIEVING THAT THE CHARISMATIC AND SEDUCTIVE DEMONOLOGIST (PLAYED BY RADHA MITCHELL) IS OUT TO HELP HIM. IT BECOMES EVEN EASIER TO BELIEVE WHEN YOU HEAR MS. MITCHELL DELIVER A LINE LIKE, "DON'T APOLOGIZE. IT'S A SIGN OF WEAKNESS" WITH SUCH A DEDUCTIVE AND HYPNOTIC DELIVERY. HER CALM, SEEMINGLY PASSIVE PORTRAYAL CERTAINLY PROVIDES A NICE CONTRAST TO THE EDGY EARNESTNESS OF MR. GRANADEROS. THIS PERFORMANCE WAS SO DIFFERENT FROM THE INTENSE, OFTEN HIGHSTRUNG NATURE SHE CONVEYED IN HER BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE IN "HIGH ART." AND EMILE HIRSCH'S OVERBEARING PORTRAYAL OF DANIEL, THE OBNOXIOUS RIVAL OF MR. GRANADEROS' CHARACTER, WAS A WORLD AWAY FROM THE SENSITIVE SOCIAL OUTCAST HE BETRAYED IN "THE MUDGE BOY." MY ONLY RESERVATION WITH THIS FILM WAS MR. VON HOFFMAN'S DECISION TO SHOW DANIEL'S SOCIAL MEDIA RAPS OVER THE FINAL CREDITS. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN MUCH BETTER TO JUST HAVE THE SONG "GREENSLEEVES" PLAYING OVER THE CREDITS BY ITSEF. AFTER ALL, WE ALREADY KNEW THAT DANIEL WAS A JERK. (IT WAS PROBABLY ALSO A MISTAKE TO MAKE THE FINAL SCENE BETWEEN MS. MITCHELL AND MR. GRANADEROS SO BLOODY).
