DEVASTATING DEPICTION OF EFFECTS OF SEX ABUSE ON VICTIMS & FAMILIES
September 24, 2023
IT'S ALWAYS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER WHAT A HARROWING EXPERIENCE IT IS FOR CHILDREN TO GO THROUGH SEXUAL ABUSE- & HOW THE E FFECTS OF IT CAN GO ON LONG AFTER CHILDHOOD IS OVER. DIRECTOR SABRINA DOYLE ACHIEVES THIS MOST POWERFULLY WHEN SHE HAS BLAKE (JUSTINE LUPE) CONFRONT HER MOTHER (AMY MADIGAN) IN A FACE-TO-FACE ENCOUNTER THAT IS SO POWERFUL THAT YOU FEEL AS IF BLAKE IS PUNCHING HER MOTHER IN THE FACE- & THE LOOK OF ANGUISH ON MS MADIGAN'S FACE CERTAINLY MAKES YOU FEEL AS IF SHE FEELS THAT WAY- & ALSO MAKES YOU SEE THAT SHE REALIZES HOW SHE HAS FAILED BLAKE. AND THE PERFORMANCE BY AUSTIN SHOENFELDT IS SO HEART-RENDING- ESPECIALLY WHEN HE IS TRYING TO CONTACT HIS GRANDMOTHER THROUGH HIS WALKIE-TALKIE WHILE SHE IS ON THE PHONE WITH SOMEONE ELSE. (IF THEY EVER DO A REMAKE OF "CAREFUL, HE MIGHT HEAR YOU," I HOPE THAT MR SHOENFELDT IS CAST AS THE BOY IN THAT FILM). AND, WHEN MS. MADIGAN SAYS TO TELLS BLAKE, "YOUR MOM & I HAVE A LOT OF STUFF TO WORK OUT" IN SUCH A SOOTHING TONE, YOU REALLY GET THE SENSE THAT THERE IS GOING TO BE A TRUE RECONCILIATION BETWEEN BLAKE & HER MOTHER. I HAVE ONLY ONE QUIBBLE: WHEN BLAKE ASKS THE POLICE OFFICER (JUSTIN ARIOLA) IF HE THINKS THAT A NIGHT IN JAIL WOULD KEEP LUCIAN FROM COMPLAINING, I DON'T THINK HE SHOULD HAVE SAID, "IF HE KEEPS COMPLAINING, JUST BRING HIM IN." INSTEAD, HE SHOULD HAVE SAID, "YOU SHOULDN'T MAKE YOUR SON SCARED OF COPS, MISS"- & I'M SURE THAT'S WHAT ALMOST ALL POLICE OFFICERS WOULD SAY.
