Regardless of your own sentiments, "Mike Wallace is Here" maintains a thoughtful tone that never feels overbearing or biased; whether you're interested in a history of the man or the field he pioneered, Belkin's film should be required viewing.

It's worth the effort to go back and research whatever you may have missed, but this is certainly a drawback for what is otherwise a wholly brilliant documentary in both style and function.

It's an approach similar to the way Wallace describes his own legacy: tough but fair. It's neither a smear campaign nor a hymn of praise. It's a genuine attempt to understand.

One is left with the impression of Wallace as a defining and singular voice who brought something to his dogged questioning that so many copycats are missing these days - elegance, gentlemanliness and a sense of staunch morality.

Wallace learned how to be inscrutable when he's the interviewee, so reveals very little about himself, but it's still a treat to watch his old interviews.

ou can make your own connections between the news of yesterday and today, but Belkin is too interested in his subject to spend time spelling out the parallels.

The film deftly weaves news and interview clips from Wallace's half-century on TV with the times he himself answered questions as tough as those he asked, fleshing out one of the country's last formidable journalists.
