SOMETIMES INGENIOUS & PROVOCATIVE- BUT SOMETIMES- TEDIOUS FILM

April 16, 2024
THIS FILM DEFINITELY HAS IMPORTANT POINTS TO MAKE ABOUT SPOUSAL ABUSE & GENITAL MUTILATION - ESPECIALLY WHEN BELLA (EMMA STONE) IS CONFRONTED BY RAMY YOUSSEF'S CHARACTER. AND DIRECTOR YORGOS LANTHIMOS & HIS CINEMATOGRAPHER ROBBIE RYAN & THEIR PRODUCTION DESIGNER (WHOSE NAME I'M AFRAID I MISSED) ALL SUCCEEDED IN CREATING TWO SEPARATE WORLDS: A BLACK & WHITE WORLD THAT RECREATED THE ATMOSPHERES OF THE OLD UNIVERSAL STUDIO MONSTER FILMS & THE BRITISH HAMMER MONSTER FILMS & A COLOR WORLD THAT LOOKED LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF OZ. & THE EERIE MUSIC FROM JERSYAIN FENDRIX ALSO RECREATED THE WORLD OF THOSE MONSTER FILMS. BUT, AFTER AWHILE BELLA'S JUVENILE BEHAVIOR & THE OAFISH BEHAVIOR OF MARK RUFFALO'S CHARACTER BECOME JUST A LITTLE TOO TEDIOUS & REPETITIOUS. THERE WAS VERY GOOD WORK BY WILLEM DAFOE- ESPECIALLY IN THe TENDER TONE HE USES WHEN HE TELLS BELLA ABOUT HE FEARS THAT PEOPLE WILL LAUGH AT HIM WHEN THEY SEE HIS FACE. AND MS. STONE IS VERY GOOD AT CONVEYING THE TRANSFORMATION OF HER CHARACTER FROM WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY A LITTLE GIRL INTO A FULLY DEVELOPED WOMAN. I SUPPOSE THAT IS WHY THE OSCAR COMMITTEE DECIDED TO GIVE HER THE ACADEMY AWARD. HOWEVER, I REALLY WISH THE OSCAR COULD HAVE GONE TO SANDRA HULLER FOR "ANATOMY OF A FALL" BECAUSE YOU REALLY SAW HER GIVE A GREATER RANGE OF EMOTIONS IN HER PERFORMANCE AS HER CHARACTER DEALT WITH THE TRAUMA OF HER HUSBAND'S DEATH & ALSO HER DILEMMA AT DEALING WITH THE PEOPLE WHO REFUSED TO BELIEVE WHAT HER CHARACTER WAS TELLING THEM. THAT IS REALLY THE TYPE OF PERFORMANCE THAT SHOULD WIN AN OSCAR.
