Thankfully, filmmaker Moratto remains intensely personal about these darkly political themes, keeping cameras tight on Socrates' face to draw out his inner feelings.

[T]he blistering sincerity in "Socrates" is not fabricated but channeled from its authentic source. Sugarcoating was not allowed.

[Moratto] imbues this unhappy slice of slum life with an energy and compassion that transcends mere miserabilism.
