The film follows Charlotte, a young woman who joins eight D-Day veterans on a road trip to retrace their steps from World War II. The veterans come to see Charlotte as a granddaughter, trusting her with their stories and confronting the trauma that still haunts them 70 years after the war.

FINAL THOUGHTS ON "SUNKEN ROADS"

December 1, 2021
I'M SORRY THAT "SUNKEN ROADS" WILL BE LEAVING IN A COUPLE OF DAYS. I HOPE THAT MORE PEOPLE WILL GET TO SEE IT- IF NOT AT THE CINEMA VILLAGE, THEN SOMEWHERE ELSE. I JUST HOPE THAT THE OSCAR VOTERS WILL REMEMBER IT AT AWARDS TIME, BUT THEY DON'T ALWAYS PICK THE BEST DOCUMENTARY. FOR EXAMPLE, I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED WHEN THE EXCELLENT WAR DOCUMENTRY "RESTREPO" WAS BEATEN BY A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT FOOTBALL PLAYERS, AND A POWERFUL DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE ATROCITIES COMMITTED BY SUKARNO AND HIS FOLLOWERS IN INDONESIA CALLED "THE ACT OF WAR" WAS BEATEN BY A FILM ABOUT BACKUP SINGERS. AND LET'S NOT FORGET THAT "THE SORROW AND THE PITY" WAS BEATEN BY "THE HELLSTROM CHRONICLES"- A MOVIE ABOUT BUGS.

GREAT REMINDER OF HOW MUCH WE ALL OWE TO WAR VETERANS

November 10, 2021
THIS MOVIE WAS ESPECIALLY SPECIAL TO ME BECAUSE MY FATHER WAS IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR, AND HIS FATHER WAS IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR, AND ONE OF MY UNCLES WAS IN THE KOREAN WAR. IN ADDITION, THREE OF MY FORMER CO-WORKERS WERE IN VIETNAM, SO, WHENEVER, I SEE SOMEONE IN A MILITARY UNIFORM, OR SOMEONE WEARING ANY FORM OF MILITARY OF INSIGNIA, I ALWAYS MAKE IT A POINT TO THANK THEM FOR THEIR SERVICE. IN FACT, ONE OF THE REASONS I COULDN'T VOTE FOR DONALD TRUMP WAS BECAUSE HE WAS SO DISRESPECTFUL TO WAR HEROES LIKE JOHN MC CAIN, GEN. COLIN POWELL, AND LT COL ADAM VINDNAM. ALSO, ONE OF THE REASONS I DISLIKED "HAROLD AND MAUDE" SO MUCH WAS BECAUSE OF THE WAY IT RIDICULED A MILITARY OFFICIAL. AND ONE OF THE REASONS I LIKED "COMING HOME" WAS BECAUSE I FELT THAT JANE FONDA MADE THAT FILM AS A WAY TO ATONE FOR ALL THE MISTAKES SHE MADE DURING THE VIETNAM WAR.

Not a typical WWII movie

November 5, 2021
Most WWII movies have an intense focus on combat or lionize the veterans as monumental heroes. This movie really gets beyond that to the vets as people grappling with trauma from their early 20s, when they were just scared kids thrown into battle. It really feels unlike any other WWII movie I've seen, and it's a super meaningful record of a generation that isn't really around anymore.

Enjoyable and interesting movie, highly recommended!

January 29, 2020
I've seen many films about D-Day and WWII, some of them memorable (especially "Saving Private Ryan") and some just ok. "Sunken Roads" is a great addition to this amazing history, telling a unique true story where different generations intersect. I really enjoyed watching and have a lot of respect for its young director.
