The first big hit of the New Year.

January 7, 2022
Director/Writer Asif Akbar brings us “The Commando”. What better way to start the New Year than with this well made thriller with a great story and a focus on the issue that still is being neglected PTSD. Michael Jai White has a legion of fans and won’t disappoint. A few of his movies are Spawn, Why Did I Get Married Too?,Mortal Kombat: Legacy, Universal Soldier: The Return. My favorite has to be and one of his best performances. It was when he portrayed legendary boxer Mike Tyson in the 1995 HBO television movie Tyson. So with all that experience , He is amazing and really carry’s the movie with his delivery of this well written script and fine fighting techniques. James Baker played by Michael Jai White is a military level DEA agent suffering from PTSD. His last mission ended tragically after a mission against a top drug lord ends in the accidental death of three innocent people hiding unarmed. Really effected and not taking it well he begins to have haunting nightmares about the mission. Unbeknownst to him is a discovery of cash hidden in the house by his daughter. Turns out the money belongs to Johnny played by tough guy Mickey Rourke. Mickey is back and looks great. The role was tailored for him and he plays it as only Mickey can. Mickey gives it his all and then some. Mickey plays an ex military officer jailed and on the brink of being released. After a probation hearing he is on his way to claim his money for a new beginning. What is supposed to be an easy task for him and his merry men is changed when it’s discovered the home has been occupants. All Johnny wants is his money and to live a normal life. But problems now have to be felt with. James and his wife go away to try to deal with his PSTD and his daughter in the meantime is throwing a house party. So now Johnny and his guys have to deal with this obstacle and things gets a lil Messy and blood is shed. Turns out Johnnys team is not on the same level As he is and are easy on the trigger. But James is in his way to diffuse the situation and save his girls. Action and thrills are set up and one of the best fighting seems in a while highlights the movie. It is with one of Johnnys boys, Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. He has an all out kickboxing fight with Michael. The legend Phil Tan was the stunt coordinator and Kieran Gallagher was the fight coordinator. The fight between cowboy Cerrone and MJW took the longest to shoot and rehearse. It’s amazing and you will be talking about it long after the credits role. Not to say the evenly matched Rourke and White have an all out to the end brawl. Mickey proves he still has it and also performed a lot of the stunts. The movie gives Michael Jai White one of the most demanding roles I have ever seen. Every one of his talents are shown through the careful eye of Director Asif Akbar. An emotionally drained man at the brink of destruction can’t seem to shake his terrible act that lead to innocent people dying. Nothing can help him, his doctor, his wife he is slowly dying a slow death. But when his family is being jeopardized he snaps out of it and goes to do what he does best. Help and rescue. But this time it’s personal. A careful eye will take a liking two standout stars Cord Newman as Rudy and Shannon Ritch. Cord plays the part of one of Johnny guy and has some of the best lines delivered with such appeal. Shannon Ritch plays a memorable scene against Mickey Rourke in the prison yard. When you see the scene you will see the grittiness and realism of what goes on in prison yards. Ritch is freaking so cool n this role. I wanted more. Gianni Capaldi is never disappointing with his Scottish charm And keeping his accent is a very rare funny moment. This includes a drunk party goer taking a pee on him and well…let’s say things get bloody. Look careful and you will spot “Ace & The Christmas miracle” star Robert Fox as a Parole officer. This movie jams a lot in its running time with a very impressive cast. The Tan legacy is not just behind the camera with Phil, but his son Sean Tan is here also and is destined for a lot more roles. His likable performance has you looking for more and will get a lot more. Let’s not forget Jeff Fahey in a role that’s against the usual characters but plays it well. Bravo. I was talking to the Director and the producers are trying to promote it more as a thriller and hero dealing with ptsd with some action but not necessarily as an action or fight film. I think it works because I really felt for the title character and his family. His suffering is shown and you feel sorry and hate to see people suffering like this. I personally can’t think of anyone else that could of done this as well as Michael. It is not preachy but part of the story. I hope people not only enjoy the movie as much as I did but reach out to people suffering from this terrible condition. After watching this with a big smile on my face I can only think to myself wow if Asif made such a wonderful movie here, I am more enthusiastic about the up coming Mr-9.
