TERRIBLY VAGUE TALE ABOUT THE DANGERS OF MILITARISM

November 21, 2021
I HAVE LIKED OTHER ABEL FERRARA FILMS (ESPECIALLY "BODY SNATCHERS" ) AND OTHER ETHAN HAWKE FILMS (ESPECIALLY THE "BEFORE SUNRISE" TRILOGY AND "BOYHOOD." MY ONLY PROBLEM WITH "BOYHOOD" CAME WHEN HIS CHARACTER TOLD HIS SON TO STEAL A "JOHN MC CAIN FOR PRESIDENT" SIGN FROM SOMEONE'S LAWN, AND THEN TRIED TO JUSTIFY IT BY SAYING THAT HE WAS BEING A "PATRIOT." SINCE SEN. MC CAIN WAS A WAR HERO AND A POW, IT's PRETTY OBVIOUS THAT HE WAS MORE PATRIOTIC THAN ANYONE. IN THAT SCENE, MR. HAWKE'S CHARACTER BEHAVED AS INTOLERANTLY AND DISRESPECTFULLY AS DONALD TRUMP). THE PROBLEM WIT H THIS FILM IS THAT NOONE SEEMED TO HAVE FOCUS ON WHAT THEY WERE TRYING TO SAY. AT ONE POINT, THE CHARACTER OF THE BROTHER IN THE MILITARY WHOM MR. HAWKE PLAYS GETS CALLED AN "IMPERIALIST" BY A HOMELESS MAN, BUT WE ARE NEVER TOLD WHAT HE DID TO MAKE HIM AN IMPERIALIST. THE OTHER BROTHER WHOM MR. HAWKE PLAYS IS SUPPOSED TO BE REVOLUTIONARY, BUT WE DON'T LEARN ANYTHING ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHOM IS HE FIGHTING, AND WHAT THEY DID TO MAKE HIM BECOME A REVOLUTIONARY. I THINK IT'S THE LACK OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHARACTERS THAT IS TO BLAME FOR Mr. HAWKE'S ESSENTIALLY MONOTONOUS PERFORMANCE. IF HE HAD BEEN MORE TO WORK WITH IN TERMS OF HIS CHARACTERS, HE WOULD HAVE HAD MORE OF A REASON TO GIVE VARIATIONS TO THE DELIVERY OF HIS DIALOGUE.
