Emotional and unashamed, 'Cazuza Boas Novas" tracks the last years of Brazil's notorious "Rebel Poet", the singer and composer Cazuza, whose battle against HIV turned him into a pioneer for the cause and its victims. Featuring never-seen intimate footage, concert pieces, archival material and conversations with some of his collaborators, lovers and family members, the documentary explores his unique creative force and how art and his music maintained him alive.

A multi-cultural Brazilian celebration featuring various artistic expressions, such as film, music, dance, arts, and literature, the 7th New York Brazilian Film Series presents the International Premiere of CAZUZA BOAS NOVAS on Sunday November 8th, 2026.

Remarkable portrait of a rebellious artist

Featuring intimate revelations from Ney Matogrosso, Gilberto Gil, Frejat, Leo Jaime, George Israel, Flavio Colker and co-director and music producer Nilo Romero, as well as Lucinha Araujo, CAZUZA BOAS NOVAS is a devastatingly emotional portrait of resistance against illness and the fragility of living. It's a brave and unashamed ode to life and all mundane pleasures. Above all, and triumphantly narrated, the doc spans the final years of a rebellious poet who found in his art the power to remain alive and truthful to his beliefs. It's a testament (and profoundly touching and sad) on the incomparable power of healing through the arts, or at least finding comfort on it, despite all odds and the brief passage of life. It shows that most of the greatest works in art are the result of extreme suffering- Cazuza created some of his most effective and revolutionary work during such circumstances. CAZUZA BOAS NOVAS celebrates the power of creative process, and the eagerness of a young rebellious soul for living at fully, for as long as life would grant him.
