AN INTRIGUING STORY DONE IN BY TOO MANY OVER-THE-TOP MELODRAMATICS
June 19, 2023
I THOUGHT THAT THIS FILM WAS GOING TO BE A SINCERE EXAMINATION OF A MAN COPING WITH THE LOSS OF HIS MOTHER, BUT DIRECTOR ARI ASTER KEPT PUSHING THE MELODRAMATICS TO A MORE AND MORE HYSTERICAL LEVEL. STEPHEN M C KINLEY HENDERSON, NATHAN LANE AND AMY RYAN KEPT THEIR PERFORMANCES RELATIVELY LOW-KEY AND TRUE-TO-LIFE, ND MS RYAN WAS PARTICULARY TOUCHING AND SENSITIVE IN ONE PARTICULAR SCENE. (I WON'T MENTION WHICH ONE BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL IT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM YET) . BUT I THOUGHT THAT MR. PHOENIX AND MS. LU PONE COULD HAVE BROUGHT THEIR PERFORMANCES DOWN TO A MORE NATURALISTIC LEVEL. THE TWO OF THEM HAVE BOTH BEEN BETTER IN OTHER FILMS & TV SHOWS. I THOUGHT MS. LUPONE WAS PARTICULARLY MOVING IN A 1993 FILM CALLED "FAMILY PRAYERS" AND I ALWAYS LOVED HER ON "LIFE GOES ON" AND SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN BRILLIANT ON STAGE. (SHE WAS T HE BEST OF THE FIVE ACTRESSES WHOM I SAW AS MARIA CALLAS IN "MASTER CLASS"). THEREFORE, I THINK THE TWO OF THEM MUST HAVE BEEN MISDIRECTED BY MR. ASTER.
