ENTHRALLING WESTERN WITH ONE TROUBLING ETHNIC TERM

September 16, 2021
THE FILM "CATCH THE BULLET" MADE A VERY GOOD STATEMENT ABOUT ANTI-NATIVE AMERICAN RACISM WHEN IT SHOWED THE CHARACTERS PLAYED BY JAY PICKETT AND CODY JONES CRITICIZING THE CHARACTER TUCKER FOR HIS BIGOTED REMARKS ABOUT INDIGENOUS PEOPLE. HOWEVER, ALL THREE CHARACTERS REFERRED TO THE LAKOTA PEOPLE AS "THE SIOUX". THE TERM "SIOUX" WAS ACTUALLY USED BY THE CHIPPEWAS TO DESCRIBE THE LAKOTA. "SIOUX" WAS REPORTED TO BE THE CHIPPEWA TERM FOR "CUTTHROAT," WHICH THEY USED TO DESCRIBE THE LAKOTAS' BRUTALITY TOWARDS THEM. THE LAKOTA MAY HAVE BEEN BRUTAL TO THE CHIPPEWAS AND THE PAWNEES, BUT WE SHOULD ALSO REMEBER THAT SO MANY WHITE SETTLERS WERE BRUTAL TO SO MANY NATIVE AMERICANS.
