Synopsis:
IT ENDS WITH US, the first Colleen Hoover novel adapted for the big screen, tells the compelling story of Lily Bloom (Blake Lively), a woman who overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life in Boston and chase a lifelong dream of opening her own business. A chance meeting with charming neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni) sparks an intense connection, but as the two fall deeply in love, Lily begins to see sides of Ryle that remind her of her parents' relationship. When Lily's first love, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), suddenly reenters her life, her relationship with Ryle is upended, and Lily realizes she must learn to rely on her own strength to make an impossible choice for her future.

THE TV FILM ABOUT TRACY THURMAN THAT I MENTIONED IN MY FIRST COMMENTS WAS CALLED "A CRY FOR HELP: THE TRACY THURMAN STORY." MRS. THURMAN WAS PLAYED BY NANCY MC KEON, HER ABUSIVE HUSBAND WAS PLAYED BY DALE MIDKIFF, & HER MOTHER WAS PLAYED BY PRISCILLA POINTER, WHO ALSO PLAYED THE GRANDMOTHER OF AN ABUSED GIRL IN A LANDMARK 1977 TV FILM ABOUT CHILD ABUSE CALLED "MARY JANE HARPER CRIED LAST NIGHT." THESE FILMS- & THE FILMS THAT I MENTIONED IN MY EARLIER COMMENTS - ALL SERVE AS EXCELLENT COMPANION PIECES TO "IT ENDS WITH US." IN PARTICULAR, "MARY JANE HARPER CRIED LAST NIGHT " HAS WHAT MAY BE THE MOST TOUCHING FINAL LINE IN TV HISTORY.

MS. FERRER AND ALEX NEUSTAEDTER- WHO PLAYS THE YOUNG ATLAS- MAKES THE LOVE BETWEEN LILY & ATLAS ALL THE MORE BELIEVABLE THROUGH THEIR GENUINE AFFECTION FOR ONE ANOTHER - ESPECIALLY WHEN HE DELIVERS THE LINE, " I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU DID IT, BUT YOU SOMEHOW MANAGED TO MAKE YOURSELF MY FAVORITE PERSON" WITH A SOFT & TENDER TONE. THAT MADE ME EVEN MORE EAGER TO SEE LILY'S & ATLAS' LOVE DEVELOP IN THE UPCOMING SEQUEL, "IT STARTS WITH US." I JUST HOPE THAT AMY MORTON WILL HAVE A LARGER ROLE IN THE SEQUEL BECAUSE I REMEMBER HOW BRILLIANT SHE WAS ON BROADWAY IN "AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY" & "WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF" & THE TOUCHING WAY MS. MORTON RESPONDED TO LILY'S QUESTION ABOUT WHY SHE STAYED WITH AN ABUSIVE HUSBAND- "IT WOULDHAVE BEEN HARDER TO LEAVE- & I LOVED HIM" - EFFECTIVELY CONVEYED THE DILEMMA OF A BATTERED WOMAN WHO WANTED TO KEEP ON LOVING HER HUSBAND IN SPITE OF THE WAY HE TREATED HER. I JUST HOPE THAT Mr. BALDONI WILL BE BACK AS DIRECTOR & THAT CHRISTY HALL WILL BE BACK AS THE SCREENWRITER, & BARRY PETERSON WILL BE BACK AS THE CINEMATOGRAPHER. THE OPENING SCENE OF LILY DRIVING TO HER FATHER'S FUNERAL- IN WHICH WE SEE SHOTS OF PICTERESQUE HOUSES- MAKES IT LOOK AS IF WE ARE ENTERING THE WORLD OF A BENIGN FAIRY TALE. BUT, AS THIS FILM MAKES ALL TOO CLEAR, EVERY FAIRY TALE HAS A VERY DARK SIDE.

AND, WHAT IS EVEN MORE EFFECTIVE, IS THAT HE SOFTENS HIS TONE WHEN HE SEES LILY (BLAKE LIVELY) SITTING ON THE EDGE OF THE ROOF, & WARNS HER ABOUT THE DANGER OF SITTING TOO CLOSE TO THE EDGE. THIS SCENE IS MADE EVEN MORE POIGNANT BY THE FACT THAT WE HAD ALREADY SEEN LILY GO THROUGH THE AGONY OF HER FATHER'S FUNERAL. MS. LIVELY WAS ALREADY INCREDIBLY TOUCHING WHEN SHE CONVEYED LILY'S RELUCTANCE TO COMPOSE THE EULOGY FOR HER FATHER (PLAYED IN FLASHBACKS BY KEVIN MC KIDD) THAT HER MOTHER (AMY MORTON) REQUESTS HER TO WRITE, & WHEN SHE RUSHES OFF THE ALTAR AT HER FATHER'S FUNERAL WHEN SHE FINDS IT IMPOSSIBLE TO FULFILL THAT REQUEST. BUT IT IS MS. LIVELY'S EMPATHETIC RESPONSE TO AN INCIDENT THAT RYLE TELLS HER HE EXPERIENCED IN HIS NEUROSURGERY PRACTICE THAT MAKES US REALIZE WHY LILY FALLS IN LOVE WITH RYLE, & WHY SHE FINDS IT DIFFICULT TO LEAVE HIM IN SPITE OF THE INCIDENTS THAT HAPPEN LATER. AND, WHEN MR. BALDONI DELIVERS THE PHRASE "UTTERLY DESTROYED" TO DESCRIBE THAT INCIDENT, HE DOES IT WITH A QUIET PASSION THAT CONVEYS RYLE'S INNER TORMENT. THAT TORMENT BECOMES ALL TOO APPARENT IN THE RESTAURANT SCENE BETWEEN LILY'S FIRST LOVE, ATLAS (BRANDON SKLENAR) AND RYLE , & THE RIGHTEOUS ANGER THAT MR. SKLENAR DISPLAYS TOWARDS RYLE MAKES US REALIZE THAT ATLAS HAS NEVER STOPPED LOVING LILY. I ALSO LOVED THE FLASHBACK SCENES BETWEEN THE YOUNG LILY (ISABELA FERRER) AND THE YOUNG ATLAS.

POWERFUL REMINDER OF A STILL URGENT ISSUE

THERE WAS A TIME WHEN HOLLYWOOD SEEMED DETERMINED TO TEACH VIEWERS ABOUT THE EPIDEMIC OF SPOUSAL ABUSE OF WOMEN: AS REPRESENTED BY DIANNE WEIST'S PORTRAYAL OF A BATTERED WIFE IN "INDEPENDENCE DAY" (WHICH WAS LATER RETITLED, "FOLLOW YOUR DREAM") AND IN JULIA ROBERT'S PERFORMANCE IN "SLEEPING WITH THE ENEMY" & WITH FARRAH FAWCETT'S LEGENDARY PERFORMANCE IN THE TV MOVIE "THE BURNING BED." (THERE WAS ALSO ANOTHER TV MOVIE BASED ON A REAL LIFE BATTERED WOMAN CASE, WHICH I THINK WAS CALLED "THE TRACY THURMAN STORY," BUT I CAN'T RECALL WHO STARRED IN IT). IN RECENT YEARS, FILM MAKERS SEEMED TO HAVE LOST INTEREST IN COVERING THIS TOPIC, BUT I AM GLAD THAT COLLEEN HOOVER DECIDED TO REVIVE THIS DISCUSSION WITH HER BRILLIANT NOVEL & THAT DIRECTOR/LEAD ACTOR JUSTIN BALDONI DECIDED TO OPTION IT. IT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN EASY FOR HIM TO DIRECT HIMSELF PLAYING SUCH A DISAGREEABLE CHARACTER AS THE WIFE-BEATING RYLE, BUT HE IS VERY EFFECTIVE AT CONVEYING THE DIFFERENT SIDES OF RYLE'S MANIC PERSONALITY. WHEN WE FIRST SEE MR. BALDONI ANGRILY KICK A CHAIR ON THE ROOF OF HIS APARTMENT BUILDING, WE RECOGNIZE HIS DANGEROUS SIDE. BUT, THEN HE SOFTENS HIS EXPRESSION.
