Visually distinct and ambitious but emotionally out of reach

August 29, 2026
Nine Black Cats is an undeniably ambitious indie with a striking visual identity.” The production makes clever use of its locations, stretching its resources to create memorable imagery and atmosphere. Chris Zuhdi’s steady, understated performance carries a dry wit that lands a few genuinely funny surprises, and that tonal consistency gives the film a recognizable rhythm. Still, strong images can only carry a story so far. The film’s limited dialogue and repeated beats often feel like time fillers rather than character builders. Hannah Brantley gives a committed performance, but her character isn’t given enough depth to let that work land. Her pursuit of justice lacks the backstory needed for emotional weight, and the relationship with Joe never develops beyond a sketch. Without a stronger sense of interiority or clearer stakes, it’s hard to fully root for anyone or care about the outcome. “Nine Black Cats” shows vision and creativity, but with deeper character development, it could have delivered something far more compelling

STYLISH, BUT DISAPPOINTING , CRIME DRAMA

August 26, 2026
I THOUGHT THAT "GAFER TIM" MADE A VERY INTERESTING COMMENT ABOUT WHAT A "FUN JOURNEY" IT WAS TO WORK ON "NINE BLACK CATS" BECAUSE IT MUST HAVE BEEN A REWARDING EXPERIENCE TO WORK ON A FILM THAT WAS SO STYLISHLY FILMED BY ITS DIRECTOR, CHRIS ZUHDI, BUT WE REALLY DIDN'T GET ENOUGH INFORMATION ABOUT THE CHARACTERS TO MAKE US FEEL AS IF WE ARE GOING THROUGH THEIR EXPERIENCES. I REALIZE THAT WE SHOULD COMMEND MR. ZUHDI FOR HAVING THE AMBITION TO DIRECT, PRODUCE, WRITE THE SCREENPLAY FOR THE FILM, & PLAY THE LEAD ROLE (IN WHICH HE GIVES A GOOD STOIC PERFORMANCE), BUT I THINK THAT IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN BETTER IF HE HAD HIRED A CO-SCREENWRITER TO GIVE US MORE INFORMATION ABOUT EVENTS SUCH AS THE SHOOTING THAT HIS CHARACTER COMMITTED BEFORE THE BEGINNING OF THE FILM. (THAT WOULD ALSO HAVE GIVEN US MORE OF A SENSE OF RELIEF WHEN WE LEARN THAT HIS CHARCTER HAS BEEN CLEARED). AND, ALTHOUGH HIS CO-STAR, HANNAH BRANTLEY GIVES A VERY GOOD PERFORMANCE, WE DON'T LEARN ENOGH ABOUT HER CHARACTER, SO HER CHAARCTER COMES ACROSS MORE AS A DEVICE TO FURTHER THE TWISTS IN THE FILM'S PLOT RATHER THAN AS A FULLY DEVELOPED PERSON. PERHAPS IT WOUL:D BE A GOOD IDEA FOR MR. ZUHDI TO STUDY THE WORKS OF GREAT CRIME WRITERS LIKE AGATHA CHRISTIE, PD JAMES, & RUTH RENDELL, SO THAT HE CAN PUT HIS TALENTS TO THEIR BEST USE.

Every time a masked character shows up, Cheer! This is a fun journey through color and emotion. It was a honor and privilege to produce the light for this story. -t
