GOOD FAMILY COMEDY/DRAMA THAT COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER

August 8, 2024
THERE SEEM TO BE TWO DIFFERENT FILMS HERE: ONE IS A TENDER FAMILY COMEDY/DRAMA ABOUT A MAN, MICKEY (JIMI PETULLA) DEALING WITH A SUDDEN REQUEST FOR DIVORCE FROM HIS WIFE, SOFIA (NATASHA WILSON) & WITH THE TROUBLES OF HIS SON, CODY (LOGAN ARDITTY) & HIUS DAUGHTER, JENNIFER (SYDNEY BULLOCK). BUT THE SCENES BETWEEN MICKEY & HIS LAWYERS & THE ONES BETWEEN MICKEY & HIS BANDMATES & THE RECORD EXECUTIVES CONTAIN SUCH EXAGGERATED BEHAVIOR & THE ACTORS WHO PLAY THESE CHARACTERS GIVE SUCH OVER-THE-TOP PERFORMANCES THAT I CAN'T HELP THINKING DIRECTOR MICKEY DAVIS DIRECTED THEM THAT WAY. HOWEVER, THE SCENES WHERE CODY IS BEING BULLIED AT SCHOOL COME OFF AS VERY TRUE-TO-LIFE & THERE IS A TOUCHING MOMENT BETWEEN CODY & DEREK, THE YOUNG MAN WHO COMES TO HIS AID. ALTHOUGH DEREK LATER DOES SOMETHING MEAN TO CODY LATER, HE REDEEMS HIMSELF IN THE END. PERHAPS THE BEST THING TO TAKE AWAY FROM THIS FILM IS THAT THERE IS ROOM FOR REDEMPTION IN ALL OF US.
